How to Become a Mason

Becoming a Mason is a meaningful decision, and we are honored you are considering it.

Freemasonry is the oldest, largest Fraternity in the world. Its members have included Kings, Presidents, Prime Ministers, Statesmen, Generals, Admirals, Supreme Court Chief Justices, corporate CEOs, opera stars, movie stars, and probably, your next door neighbor.

Becoming a Mason is a meaningful decision, and we are honored you are considering it. The process is straightforward, and it starts with reaching out.

A Mason walks toward the light — Leaders invite others on a journey
01

Express Your Interest

Reach out to the lodge by phone, email, or by attending one of our open events. A brother will be happy to answer your questions and tell you more about what Freemasonry means to him personally. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month at 1105 LeBeau Street, Arabi, LA 70032.

02

Do you Believe

Do you believe in God? Do you believe in honor and that a man has a responsibility to act with honor? Are you willing to give help to your Brothers when they need it? Do you believe that you have a responsibility to leave the world a better place? Do you agree that man should show compassion for others, that goodness of heart is among the most important of human values? You must be at least 18 years of age.

03

Submit a Petition

Complete a petition for membership, which will be reviewed by the lodge. You will need to be vouched for by a Master Mason who knows you, or be introduced to the lodge through our inquiry process.

04

Be Balloted

The lodge votes by ballot on your petition. Freemasonry is a voluntary association, and the ballot ensures that every new member is welcomed unanimously by his future brothers.

05

Receive the Degrees

If accepted, you will receive the three degrees of Freemasonry — Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason — each a ceremony rich in symbolism and moral instruction.

06

Join the Brotherhood

As a Master Mason of Dante Lodge #174, you join a worldwide fraternity dedicated to making good men better. Your journey continues through fellowship, charitable work, Masonic education, and service to your family, profession, and community.

May we build not only temples of stone, but also temples of character — wisdom, brotherhood, and truth

“We represent a fraternity which believes in justice and truth and honorable action in your community… men who are endeavoring to be better citizens… [and] to make a great country greater. This is the only institution in the world where we can meet on the level all sorts of people who want to live rightly.”
